What is the “Butterfly Oasis”?

Driven by the ZERYNTHIA Association and in collaboration with Butterfly Conservation Europe, the “Butterfly Oasis” project aims to improve green spaces by incorporating plants beneficial to butterflies and other pollinating insects.

This initiative not only seeks to raise awareness about the importance of these insects, but also to foster more biodiverse urban environments.

How have we implemented this at Hotel Bell Repòs as a sustainable hotel?

To transform Hotel Bell Repòs  into a “Butterfly Oasis” we were inspired by the project that Sterna carried out in the Platja d’Aro ponds park with ZERYNTHIA.

From the hotel, we have installed a drip irrigation system throughout our garden, which allows us to save water while maintaining our green environment.

Additionally, we have replaced lawn areas that required large amounts of water with native plants, many of which are aromatic and bloom at different times of the year, thus creating a perfect environment for butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Conditions for a “Butterfly Oasis” garden

  • Plant Variety:

Include native species of host plants that serve as food for butterfly larvae, and also nectar-producing plants with nectar-rich flowers for adult butterflies.

  • Garden Management:

Incorporate respectful gardening practices to allow for the presence of wild plants and avoid excessive use of fertilizers and herbicides.

Also, it is important to eliminate invasive plants so that beneficial plants for butterflies can thrive, as well as learn to identify which of these plants are most suitable for the “Butterfly Oasis.”

  • Suitable Habitat:

It is necessary to create an environment that provides everything butterflies need to thrive, including the presence of water and natural refuges to protect them from predators.

It should be noted that each garden is unique, and therefore, the optimal conditions for each may vary depending on location, climate, and butterfly species.

The most important thing is to create a welcoming and supportive space for the survival and protection of these insects, which are essential to the ecosystem.
